When trying to starting office 2008 for mac (word, excel, powerpoint) on my mac, it crashes. I've tried dumping preferences and reinstalling the app but it doesn't work. Entourage works fine. Office gives me a lengthy error report (below) and closes. The funny part about it is that on another users account on the mac, the programs will open.
Word 2008 for Mac has different UI than Window. Here's the tutorial for the Mac user that run Word 2008. Loss of data is no good, enable Auto Save feature in Word 2008 can prevent tat. With Auto Save feature turned on, Word will auto save every x minutes you set for it.
I tried disabling fonts to see if that was the problem, but it wasn't Any suggestions? If the Office apps run from a different user account, that would show that the problem is with a file located in the user's Home folder.
As an experiment, quit out of all the Office apps including Messenger and Entourage, and move the Microsoft User Data folder from Documents to the Desktop. Do NOT let anything bad happen to this folder, if you want to keep using Entourage's locally-saved email database file! Now launch Word.
What happens? If OK, close Word, trash the new User Data folder and put the old one back in Documents where you got it. If Word didn't crash, you have to suspect there's a bad Auto-Recovery file or Word Script Menu Item. Crashing on launch could be caused by corruption of Words global Normal template. Word reads this file whenever it starts up, to load your default document formatting.

1) Make sure Words not running - that part should take care of itself:rolleyes: 2) Use Spotlight to find the file named Normal.dotm and re-name it Normal.bak. The Mac OS may warn against, but ignore this warning. If Spotlight doesn't show you the Normal template file, its usual location is: Your User Name/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/U ser Templates.
3) After you get through this, launch Word. 3) Is the problem gone?
Then you can move Normal.bak to the Trash. Word has created a fresh default Normal template. Youve lost any format customizations you used to have, so as you create new custom formats, make a backup copy of Normal.dot. That way you have something to fall back on if your usual Normal template gets ruined again. 4) Still have the problem? Bummer, but this behavior can have more than one cause.
Here is how to think about it: What do you know for sure? A) Word launches, then crashes immediately. B) It worked OK before. But something changed.
C) Other MS Office 2008 apps dont have the problem. D) Reinstalling Office updates does not help. E) This happens in one user account, but not in others. What does that indicate? A) Word seems to be crashing when it tries to open a file in its startup path: a temp file, a default template, its own preference settings. Or maybe a Word file you double-clicked to launch the application. B) Those are all things that can change as you use Word, without your being aware of it.
Something may have gotten corrupted, or (less likely) access permissions may have gone wrong. C) If only Word has the problem, the problem is probably with something only Word needs to use. D) Updating does not help, so Word itself does not seem to be broken. E) The problem exists somewhere in the users Home folder (no reason to believe its anywhere else). So, again - Word itself is probably not broken. What do you do now?
1) Repairing permissions on your startup disk with Disk Utility never hurts, and could fix something important, so do it. 2) By trial and error, find and delete the file thats killing Word. Word crashes when you double-click its launch icon? Then its not a corrupt document, so suspect a default template (.dot. file) or application preferences (.plist file). 3) Completely uninstall and re-install MS Office.
Let the Office installer find and remove any leftover bits of older or trial versions. This method works, but is still kind-of a lose, because it is really inconvenient, and you havent learned how to handle the issue better if/when it comes back. Also, you may overlook the file that was causing the problem. If it's still there, so is the problem. 4) The nuclear option: you can delete and recreate your user account on the Mac. You have to copy all your data files someplace safe first. Dont forget about the Office Identities folder in /Documents/Microsoft User Data/ if you have saved email in Entourage.
